Great for Identifying Rocks and Minerals!
When I took Geology in college, I loved the course. I only had one problem. It was very difficult for me to identify rocks and minerals in the field. If I had had this pocket field guide, the course would have been a snap. Now, I enjoy taking my children to study outcroppings, and this book will be a great addition to our investigations.First, the photographs are stunning. In fact, any temptation I might have had to develop my own samples is set aside by having these wonderful images to use. Second, the information is detailed and thorough. There is a lot about the crystalline structure of each mineral, the hardness, and many tests that are specific to that particular mineral. There is a very good section that describes how to apply the hardness tests (I always had trouble memorizing that area for some reason). a must have for any rockhound or gem and crystal lover
I am more of a gem and crystal lover myself, yet I am happy to own this book. Whenever I go thru it I have a real URGE to go out hunting! Very comprehensive, quite technical, classifies rocks and minerals according to chemical formula (sulphides, oxides, halides, carbonates etc) or type of formation (sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous), and then works thru ecah subgruop alphabetically. Detailed descriptions, chemistry, hardness, tests, BEAUTIFUL photos, detailed index and glossary. Only thing I am missing is WHERE ON EARTH am I most likely to find them (especially the ones I absolutely LOVE), so I can plan my next vacation :D

I am new to the study of geology and have found this book to be indispensable in identifying rocks and minerals in the field. It even has a few tips at the beginning about how to do tests, and each mineral suggests tests to further aid in identifying them. It has also been a great reference when reading texts about geology. I use it to look up the rocks and minerals mentioned there. Very helpful for later field study. The least I can say is: buy this book, it is EXCELLENT!!

Terrific Inquiry-Based Lesson Starter!
This wonderful book is a great way to begin a lesson on rocks and minerals! It's imaginative and beautifully written. My third grade class loved it! I will use it every year to begin our inquiry-based science unit on rocks and minerals! The creative way to classify rocks was a very nice way to begin the topic of rocks and minerals with the students! We even started our own collection, using Christian's unique way of classifying them!

Seeing the World through a Child's Eyes
What a marvelous book. It grabs and hold your interest and the interest of my 1, 3, and 6 year old. We borrowed this from the library and today I am purchasing it online. This well written book shows the joy of rocks. Most of us have at one time or another have kicked a rock in front of us. Now you can learn why! Many of us have sat on a rock and now we see why it was such a perfect place to sit. Introduce your children to the wonders of the world around them with this exceptional book. Now I am on a mission to find any other books by this author. This is not a rock identification book, but rather a book that teaches observation and appreciation of rocks.

A WONDERFUL BOOK THAT STRUCK CLOSE TO HOME.
Since I was a little boy, long, long ago, I have had a fascination for rocks. As I grew older I cannot count the hours I have spent in creek beds, hill sides, fields and on dirt roads, first with my children, then with my four grandsons, looking for, talking about, wondering about and simply "seeing" rocks. This wonderful small volume says it all and captures the beauty of rocks and the beauty of children as they explore and expierence them. The lyrical prose/verse that tell the story of rocks is a pure joy to read. The photographs of children and rocks will touch anyone who who enjoys the company of small children and of rocks. Barbara Hirsch Lember has done a wonderful, artistic job with her camera and technique and Peggy Christian has given us some very impressive text. This is simply a well done and beautiful book and I am quite sure that you and your child or grandchild will get as much pure joy from it as I have. Box of Rocks
Good, but not perfect. Some of the mineral specimens have been tumbled and polished, which makes them pretty, but removes the diagnostic criteria (cleavage, crystal shapes) that are a basis for identifying minerals. Quartz appears more than once in the collection. Partitions in the plastic box that the collection comes in are thin, and in both of the boxes I bought a heavy specimen had broken a partition in transit, damaging the more fragile specimen in the adjacent cubicle. The accompanying booklet is good, but it shows some minerals that are not in the collection. The small magnifying glass is a good touch.

Box of rocks
My son has really enjoyed this product and I like that it comes with a pamphlet that describes the different kinds of rocks. The container that the rocks came in has a few cracks on the bottom, however it is still very much usable.

great rocks for kids
Recieved order of box of rocks and container was broken in several spots. ordered a replacement ( with no problem) and the replacement container was also broken - kept it anyway - my son loves the rocks and was okay with a broken plastic box. It probably broke in transit - needs packing materials insdie box. overall great for kids who love rocks and not boxes !

A nice addition to a terrarium project!
My wife made a terrarium with some succulents and cactus plants. She purchased several bags of polished river rock to accent the soil and to establish the proper drainage for the project. These stones were a nice touch and added to the beauty and functionality of the terrarium.They make a nice addition to any such project and it is worth considering using them. She enjoyed planning and completing her little home décor project and it is a good hobby for her. The polished stones are worth the expense!

Good price, fine product. Just what I expected and I would recommend. In the future I will probably try specific color but the mix is very natural looking and pleasing to the eye... also a couple bucks cheaper. Could be used for many decoration purposes or crafts.

This book ROCKS!
I'd love to tell you I bought this book for my 5 year old as a companion to his rock collection, but I mostly bought it for myself. I'm going to school to be an Earth Science teacher and pre-ordered this book as soon as I discovered it. It is very informative and the bright, colorful photos make identifying different types of rocks and minerals a breeze. My 5 year old also approves. I definitely recommend it for all rock collectors, big and small.

Neat Key Holder
These blend in with some stones I have so work well . I did put the key in a small plastic coin bag to make sure it stayed dry and didn't rust . I bought several of these and the bottom cover (white) had corners showing on two of them . Took a file and filed them down so they aren't visible now. Covered two of them up with other rocks stacked on them since they are well made . If one has a little more white or light color than you like use black Magic Marker to touch them up . I am well pleased with them .

Good product for right price
The price of this key rock is perfect. The key rock is hard to detect when placed among other rocks or outdoor material. We've had one for 20 years, and it looks the same as the day we started to use it. This was purchased for a relative who needed to place a key outdoors. No need to spend a lot of money for something so simple and easy to use.
